COMM 001 SURVEY OF MASS COMMUNICATION

Examination of the role mass media plays in society, democracy and our lives. Evolution and impact of news and entertainment media, social media, gaming, music and audio content, film, television, public relations, advertising and digital media. Theories of mass media influence and roles, rights and responsibilities of both citizens and the media. Total of 54 hours lecture.

COMM 101 COMMUNICATION FIELD PRACTICE

Student projects and supervised on-campus experience in speech pathology, telecommunications, theater arts (including on-campus radio and television production), engineering, newswriting, theater arts technology. Pass/no pass grading. Total of 90 hours field practice.

In this course, students learn and apply foundational rhetorical theories and techniques of public speaking in a multicultural democratic society. Students discover, develop, and critically analyze ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, delivery to a live audience and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches. No credit if taken after COMM C1000H, SPCH 001, or SPCH 001H. Formerly SPCH 001. Total of 54 hours lecture.

In this course, students learn and apply foundational rhetorical theories and techniques of public speaking in a multicultural democratic society. Students discover, develop, and critically analyze ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, delivery to a live audience and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches. This is an honors course. This enriched course is designed for the Honors Program requiring students to use stronger analytical skills to research and deliver speeches of more advanced topics. No credit if taken after COMM C1000, SPCH 001, or SPCH 001H. Formerly SPCH 001H. Total of 54 hours lecture.
