PHRM 950  PHARMACOLOGIC AGENTS – COMMON MEDICATIONS

Study of the most commonly prescribed and compounded pharmacological agents in the major drug categories used to treat or prevent human disease. Topics include dosage calculations, scope of practice, legal implications, fundamentals of sterile compounding, and preparation of IV and chemotherapeutic agents. For certified pharmacy technicians to advance their skills and knowledge for more advanced clinical roles or students in training to become pharmacy technicians. Total of 36 hours lecture.

Prerequisite(s): PHRM 950
Enrollment Limitation: 1) Proof of valid California Pharmacy Technician License (CPhT), or 2) Transcripts showing successful completion of any of the following: Completion of an educational training program and passing the PTCB or possession of an ExCPT Certificate; Apprenticeship in a Pharmacy and then passing the PTCB or possess of an ExCPT Certificate; Prior military experience as documented on the DD214 showing evidence of Pharmacy Technician Training

Preparation of parenterally administered and sterile compounded agents, including safety and legal considerations and the responsibility of the pharmacy technician. Examination of clean room and sterile processes for preparation of pharmacologic agents, IV fluid, Total Parenteral Nutrition preparation, and safe handling and preparation of cytotoxic agents. For Certified Pharmacy Technicians to advance their skills and knowledge to pursue more advanced clinical roles. Total of 27 hours lecture and 27 hours laboratory.
