Advanced Pharmacy Technician – Occupational Skills Certificate

The Advanced Pharmacy Technician program is designed to prepare current certified pharmacy technicians and students who recently completed pharmacy technician programs the opportunity to expand their scope of practice to include hospitals, clinics, or compounding pharmacy practice. Completion of the Advanced Pharmacy Technician program will increase employability and the possibility of wage gain for completers as they gain the required knowledge and skills to apply for work opportunities as Sterile Compounding and Intravenous fluid preparing pharmacy technicians. 

Requirements for selection and acceptance into the Advanced Pharmacy Technician program:


Entry requirements for the program are aligned with the State of California Pharmacy Professions Code which outlines the scope of practice of pharmacy technicians.

  1. 18 years of age or older.
  2. Completion of High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  3. Proof of valid California Pharmacy Technician License, or transcripts showing successful completion of any of the following is required for enrollment in the second course of the program (PHRM 200 - PHARMACOLOGIC AGENTS - SPECIALIZED MEDICATIONS:

  • Completion of an educational training program and passing the PTCB or possession of an ExCPT Certificate
  • Apprenticeship in a Pharmacy and then passing the PTCB or possession of an ExCPT Certificate
  • Prior military experience as documented on the DD214 showing evidence of Pharmacy Technician Training

4. Enrollment is determined by the applicant pool and the selection process is by lottery while adhering to all Federal and State Laws.

5.  Students must provide their own transportation to all on- and off-campus laboratory or clinical sites. Assignments may be scheduled between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. daily, including Sat and Sun.

An Occupational Skills Certificate is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.

Program Outcomes

  • Explore concepts around safety and legal requirements for the pharmacy technician engaged in more advanced work including IV preparation, sterile compounding, and handling hazardous agent.
  • Demonstrate safety with medications including dosage calculations, sterile and non-sterile preparations and use of appropriate personal protective equipment for handling various medications.
  • Appropriately use the following terms tonicity, osmolarity, osmolality, compatibility, stability, and compatibility as it pertains to sterile compounding of pharmacologic agents.
  • Evaluate parenteral products and routes, and the necessity of aseptic compounding and the laws pertaining to pharmacy technicians performing these tasks.
  • Identify the most commonly used compounded drugs, chemotherapeutic agents and parenterally administered agents.
