Elementary Teacher Education – Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer to CSU

Top Code:

4901.20

The Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education for Transfer Degree is designed for future elementary or special education teachers. This degree fosters exploration of a broad range of topics in the field of education and provides a strong foundation for students who aspire to become teachers in TK-12 grade schools, as well as offers preparation for students who are considering teacher credential programs.

Completion of an approved California community college Associate in Arts degree in Elementary Teacher Education will satisfy CSU’s Liberal Studies B.A. degree major preparation courses at several schools, as well as other possible major areas that have blended Bachelors and multiple-subject (elementary) credential options. For example, competing this Associates degree will also prepare students for the Urban Learning or Chicana/o/x majors at CSULA with a combined elementary/multiple-subject teaching credential, as well as the Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies major at Cal Poly Pomona, among other programs. Such credential programs prepare students to become professional teachers, integrating the tools of theory and research to improve classroom practice. (Note: Students can also follow the Child Development pathway to becoming an elementary teacher at various CSU schools.)

The Associate in Arts in Elementary Teacher Education for Transfer Degree requirements:

  1. Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University.
  2. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education-Breadth Requirements.
  3. A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
  4. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
  5. All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, or P if the course is graded on a P/NP basis.
