The Phlebotomy Technician program provides the student with the necessary skills to seek employment in hospitals, clinics, doctor's office laboratories, blood banks, and health centers. Emphasis is on drawing blood from patients and preparing it for further medical testing, specimen processing, and patient registration.
Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy Technician course, the student will receive the Occupational Skills Certificate of Phlebotomy Technician Program and be eligible to take the certification exam, complete the mandatory hands-on externship hours, and qualify to apply to the State of California Department of Public Health for a license as a Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I).
Requirements for selection and acceptance into the Phlebotomy Technician program:
Entry requirements for the program are aligned with the State of California Department of Public Health – LFS which outlines the specific requirements for phlebotomy education programs
- 18 years of age or older
- Completion of High School Diploma, equivalent, or successful completion college level general education coursework
- Must purchase HPSO professional liability insurance (student phlebotomist)
- Must complete background check, drug screen, and TB test
- No history of Felonies (Misdemeanors may cause denial of your License application – see CA Dept. of Public Health for details.
- Must attend Mandatory Orientation.
- Enrollment is determined by the applicant pool and the selection process is by lottery while adhering to all Federal and State Laws.
- Students must provide their own transportation to all on- and off-campus laboratory or clinical sites. Assignments may be scheduled between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. daily, including Sat and Sun.
An Occupational Skills Certificate of Phlebotomy Technician Program is awarded upon successful completion of the course with a grade of Pass.
- Communicate verbally and nonverbally effectively and appropriately in the clinical setting.
- Perform standard operating procedures to collect specimens via venipuncture and capillary.
- Apply medical terminology, infection control and safety, anatomy and physiology of body systems, and anatomic terminology in order to relate major areas of the clinical laboratory to general pathologic conditions associated with the body systems.
- List collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions, and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents.
- Discuss quality assurance, quality control, requisitioning, and specimen transport and processing in phlebotomy.
