Adult Basic Education - Certificate of Competency

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is designed to provide adult learners elementary education in the areas of Language Arts and Math. Upon completion of ABE, students can transfer to the Adult High School Diploma program, workforce readiness programs, and/or short-term vocational programs. ABE provides instruction in basic reading skills, particularly developing reading comprehension and reading fluency up to an 8th grade level. Students also learn to incorporate conventions of standard English grammar and usage in writing. Additionally, students explore future educational and workplace opportunities. Ultimately, the goal is to help adult learners acquire the basic skills they need to continue an academic or workforce pathway. 

Program Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of the concepts in English language arts and mathematics that prepare students to enter the Adult High School Diploma program, GED, workforce readiness programs, and/or short-term vocational programs. 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate ideas and information.
  • Demonstrate study skill habits that enable students to enter the Adult High School Diploma program, workforce readiness programs, and/or short-term vocational programs.
