This program includes a review of the history and the government of the United States while preparing students to take and pass the USIS citizenship interview and English and civics tests. Students will also reflect on and discuss selected topics related to the culture of the United States while improving their English language communication skills. The program is designed for students at an intermediate to advanced level of ESL (noncredit levels 3, 4, 5 or above).
 

Program Outcomes

• Explain fundamental aspects of U.S. history, government and civic life using a sufficient level of English language competency to pass the USCIS citizenship test (including the interview, English test and civics test).
• Identify, examine, and discuss key cultural aspects of the U.S., such as symbols, social norms, holidays, special events, typical daily life and leisure activities.
• Analyze and discuss communication issues and other difficulties new immigrants face navigating life in the U.S.
