Topics include listening comprehension, communication strategies, interpersonal and intercultural competence, discussion of high-interest topics, and oral presentations. Designed for students at an intermediate to advanced level of ESL (noncredit ESLN Levels 4, 5 and above). Total of 18-54 hours lecture.
Effective pronunciation of American English. Topics include the fundamental components of stress, rhythm, and intonation, as well as recognizing and producing key individual speech sounds (vowels and consonants), within the context of beginning to intermediate vocabulary and grammar structures. Advanced instruction and training in effective pronunciation of American English. Topics include details of stress, rhythm (connected speech), and intonation, as well as recognizing and producing complex features of vowels and consonants, within the context of advanced vocabulary and sentence structures. Designed to strengthen the existing grammar skills of beginning high to intermediate ESLN students (levels 2 and 3). Topics include basic English sentence structures and the appropriate use of verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. Total of 54 hours lecture.
For intermediate to advanced ESLN students (levels 4, 5 and above) who seek to improve their grammar skills in order to achieve more effective communication at work, school and in the community. Topics include the advanced use of verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and articles, as well as the development of complex sentence structures. Total of 54 hours lecture.
Focus on basic writing skills relevant to producing sentences and paragraphs in both formal and informal contexts. Targeted at beginning-high to intermediate ESLN students (Levels 2 and 3) who want to strengthen their writing skills. Total of 72 hours lecture.
Focus on advanced grammar and writing skills to produce effective paragraphs and essays. Introduction to finding, using and citing sources. Targeted at intermediate to advanced ESLN students (Levels 4, 5 and above) who want to strengthen their writing skills in preparation for further academic work or employment. Designed to build vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies for High-Beginner to Low-Intermediate ESLN students (Levels 2-3). Instruction emphasizes learning basic vocabulary in context and using a variety of reading strategies to increase comprehension, critical thinking and fluency. Total of 54 hours lecture.
Designed to build vocabulary development and reading comprehension strategies for intermediate to advanced ESLN students (levels 4 and 5). Instruction focuses on reading strategies useful in academic settings, personal contexts, and the workplace. Heavy emphasis on learning advanced vocabulary in context, and using various reading strategies to increase reading comprehension. Total of 54 hours.
Reflection and discussion of selected topics related to the cultures of the United States while improving English language communication skills. Exploration of holidays, special events, cultural symbols, daily living, leisure activities, and common challenges faced by new immigrants. Recommended for high intermediate to advanced ESL students (ESLN levels 4, 5 and higher). The ESLN Path to Citizenship Certificate of Competency is awarded upon passing both ESLN 1125 and ESLN 1126. Preparation for the USCIS citizenship interview and English and civics tests. Includes an overview of the naturalization process and test practice. Key aspects of U.S. history, civics and government are reviewed and explained as they relate to contemporary life in the U.S. Development of intermediate to advanced English language skills is embedded throughout the course.
