1205.10The Phlebotomy Technician program provides the student with the necessary skills to seek employment in hospitals, clinics, doctor's office laboratories, blood banks, and health centers. Emphasis is on drawing blood from patients and preparing it for further medical testing, specimen processing, and patient registration.
Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy Technician course, the student will receive the Occupational Skills Certificate of Phlebotomy Technician Program and be eligible to take the certification exam, complete the mandatory hands-on externship hours, and qualify to apply to the State of California Department of Public Health for a license as a Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I).
Pass or no pass grading. A passing grade must be achieved to receive the Occupational Skills Certificate of Phlebotomy Technician Program.
Program Outcomes
- Communicate verbally and nonverbally effectively and appropriately in the clinical setting.
- Perform standard operating procedures to collect specimens via venipuncture and capillary.
- Apply medical terminology, infection control and safety, anatomy and physiology of body systems, and anatomic terminology in order to relate major areas of the clinical laboratory to general pathologic conditions associated with the body systems.
- List collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions, and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents.
- Discuss quality assurance, quality control, requisitioning, and specimen transport and processing in phlebotomy.
