4903.00The study of humanities records and interprets the human experience in a variety of different cultural and historical contexts. As a whole, the discipline of humanities includes history, media studies, science and technology studies, philosophy, art history, cultural studies, literature, ethics, and many other related disciplines. The humanities examine the role of the arts, literature, and theory in everyday life, as means of knowledge production, and as tools of political power through time. These disciplines work to define and understand culture in order to better interpret the past and as well as to understand how present systems and one’s sense of self bears the imprint of the past. Humanities students become savvy critics and interpreters of culture through the development of theoretical and historical frameworks and work to situate themselves within a rich fabric of human identity, experience, and expression.
For students intending to transfer, courses identified for the area of emphasis fulfill major preparation requirements as demonstrated through ASSIST.org articulation. Select courses are based on ASSIST.org data for major preparation articulation with selected transfer institutions. Consult with a Counselor for specific information regarding the intended major at the college the student is choosing. Courses used to complete a student's area of emphasis can double count for general education just as they may for any other major. Although the associate degree recognizes the completion of lower division general education requirements, it does not guarantee admission to a specific campus in the CSU or UC system, nor does it guarantee admission to a specific major or a specific community college program. Some majors and schools require a higher GPA than is necessary for the associate degree. Students should meet with a Counselor to determine the lower division major preparation coursework in addition to which general education pattern is required for transfer or for community college programs.
Program Outcomes
- Analyze diverse areas of history, culture, theory, and contemporary issues through a variety of humanities disciplines.
- Develop critical thinking, information competency, ethical reasoning, and analytical skills as outlined in one or more of the classes for the AA in Humanities.
- Examine human experiences as they relate to diverse perspectives, ethical reasoning, self-expression, world civilization, and the natural world.
