The Fashion Design option will prepare the graduate to work in a design room as assistant designer, junior designer, merchandiser, buyer, stylist, illustrator or graphic artist. A design room internship is part of this training program. Studies include advanced design and computer assisted illustration, along with current color and textile trends in the apparel industry. A portfolio of designs and a fashion collection is part of the final requirements.

The curriculum prepares students for the workplace environment with skills required to work in a fashion design business as a design assistant, product merchandiser, junior buyer, stylist, production manager, or design room manager. The coursework covers advanced skills in current computer technologies, apparel product design, flat pattern, and pattern draping. Digital technologies include tech packs with production flats, spec sheets, and costing. Career preparation includes a resume, preparation of an online portfolio and professional internship. Upon completion of the required courses, the student will have a working vocabulary and first hand knowledge of the apparel industry.

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.

Program Outcomes

  • Design and produce advanced level apparel using target market research, trend influences and appropriate fabric selection.
  • Create a digital portfolio, industry marketing materials and production documents developed from an industry internship and posted online.
  • Utilize current draping and drafting methods to create original well-fitting patterns.
  • Demonstrate an advanced level proficiency in operating industrial equipment for apparel industry garment construction and fabric selection.
