The Emergency Medical Technician curriculum prepares the student to take on significant responsibility within the allied health team as a prehospital practitioner. Employment positions are available as firefighters, lifeguards, law enforcement, ambulance services, public health outreach facilities and hospitals. Students completing the program are able to begin a career as an Emergency Medical Technician and prepare for training as a Paramedic.  Specific tasks may be performed such as assisting with and providing direct patient care, obtaining diagnostic vital signs and patient information, airway and respiratory support, assisting with patient prescribed emergency medications, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, splinting, bandaging, bleeding control, ambulance operations, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and patient compartments, and customer billing.  Emergency Medical Service offers variety, flexibility, excellent working conditions, and personal satisfaction. Students successfully completing the program will be prepared to take the National Registry of EMTs initial Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) exam and qualify for certification as an EMT in the State of California, as well as other states following the National Education Standards and NREMT testing. Participation off-campus ambulance ride-alongs are required for program completion as an EMT. Students must provide their own transportation to off-campus sites. A selected uniform and body substance isolation kit are required for the off-site program participation. 
 
The Emergency Medical Technician curriculum is accredited by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency and approved by the California EMS Authority.  A social security number or a TIN is required to take the National Registry of EMTs exam.  Fingerprinting and background investigation is mandatory for EMT certification in California.

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.  

Student Selection and Fees: 

Requirements for Admission into the Emergency Medical Technician program are: 

  1. Current CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) card, which must be maintained while in the program. CPR training can be obtained from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, Health Care Provider course. 
  2. Minimum of 18 years of age for Emergency Medical Technician (EMED 101A, 101C). 

Fees: 

  • Uniforms that abide by the Emergency Medical Technician  ride-along (EMED 101C) dress code: approximately $150                                     
  • Equipment and supplies, textbooks: approximately $255
  • A current CPR/Basic Life Support card for Health Professionals  provided by the American Heart Association or American  Red Cross must be maintained while in the program (contact organization for cost of training): approximately $75
  • Proof of MMR Vaccination, COVID-19 Vaccination, Flu Vaccination, TB Negative Test, Flu, N95 fit test: approximately $80
  • Livescan, Testing and Certification fees: approximately $310
  • 10.0 units+ (refer to school website for current fees  unit cost, health, parking, etc.)

Program Outcomes

  • Develop the necessary skills and knowledge in human anatomy and physiology for basic level prehospital care.
  • Differentiate diagnostic signs and interpretations of sudden illness and injuries for basic level prehospital care.
  • Demonstrate the necessary skills and procedures of basic emergency rescue and care.
