Courses listed in more than one area may be certified in only a single area (Area 1A-7)
California State University General Education Breadth Certification Program
California State University (CSU) requirements for advanced undergraduate standing and general education are listed below. Requirements for the individual CSU campuses are similar, but students should consult specific catalogs as each may have additional requirements. For instance, a given campus may have added lower and/or upper-division general education requirements so long as the requirement applies equally to native as well as transfer students.
Under this program, candidates for the Baccalaureate Degree at a CSU must meet the general education requirement of 48 units. A student may currently meet 39 units of this requirement at Pasadena City College. The remaining 9 units must be completed at the upper-division level.
Students expecting to request CSU GE Breadth certification should complete 39 units distributed among categories A through F as noted with no less than 30 units for areas A through D. Areas A and B4 must be fully completed with minimum grades of C- prior to transfer. A single course may not meet more than one area requirement.
Students who complete all requirements of CSU GE Breadth and request certification will have the CSU GE Breadth certification noted on their final transcript. Students are encouraged to meet with an Academic Counselor for complete information.
Students whose majors require more than 30 units should consult with an Academic Counselor regarding the advisability of prioritizing completion of major requirements instead of general education requirements.

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) permits a student to transfer from a community college to a campus in either the California State University (CSU) or the University of California (UC) system without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower division general education courses to satisfy campus GE requirements.
Completion of the IGETC is not a requirement for transfer to a CSU or a UC, nor is it the only way to fulfill the lower division general education requirements of the CSU or UC prior to transfer. As an alternative, students transferring to the CSU may choose to follow the CSU General Education Breadth pattern. Students may also elect to fulfill the graduation requirements listed in the catalog of any specific CSU or UC campus.
Students who complete all requirements of IGETC for CSU or UC and request certification will have the IGETC certification noted on their final transcript. Students are encouraged to meet with an Academic Counselor for complete information.
Due to substantial lower division prerequisites in high-unit majors such as engineering, architecture, and the physical and natural sciences, IGETC may be an inappropriate option. Individual colleges or majors within a UC campus may not accept IGETC for meeting general education. A list of those UC colleges and majors is found on the UC website. Please consult an Academic Counselor for additional information.
If IGETC is chosen as the option to fulfill the general education requirements, all areas must be met with minimum grades of C or Pass prior to transfer.
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum Requirements
Area 1 - English Communication
Complete two courses, 6 semester units (or 8 quarter units) with at least one course each from 1A and 1B. Students transferring to a CSU must also complete one course, 3 semester units (or 4 quarter units) from 1C.
1B - Critical Thinking/English Composition
1C - Oral Communication (CSU requirement only)
Area 2 - Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning
Complete one course, 3 semester units (or 4 quarter units).
Area 3 - Arts and Humanities
Complete three courses, 9 semester units (or 12 quarter units) with at least one course each from 3A and 3B.
Area 4 - Social and Behavioral Sciences
Complete two courses, 6 semester units (or 8 quarter units) from at least two academic disciplines.
Area 5 - Physical and Biological Sciences
Complete two courses, 7 semester units (or 9 quarter units) with at least one course each from 5A and 5B, including one associated laboratory course in 5C.
Area 6 - Language Other than English (UC requirement only)
Complete the equivalent of two years of high school study in a single language other than English.
Area 7 - Ethnic Studies
Complete one course, 3 semester units (or 4 quarter units).
American Institutions (CSU only)
Not required for IGETC certification. All CSU campuses have a graduation requirement in U.S. History, Constitution, and American Ideals. This requirement may be met at Pasadena City College by completing two courses: one course in U.S. History (within Areas 3B and 4) and POLS 001 (within Area 4).
