BLDN 2300  INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH FOR THE BUILDING TRADES

This course offers a foundational overview of occupational safety and health principles as they apply to the construction industry. Students will gain a thorough understanding of OSHA regulations, with emphasis on the 29 CFR 1926 standards. Core topics include the identification of common construction site hazards, safe practices for using ladders, scaffolds, and working platforms, and the proper selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), guided by job hazard analysis and the hierarchy of controls. Students will also learn to recognize chemical hazards through the Global Harmonized System (GHS) pictograms and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The course includes certified training in CPR and First Aid for adults, children, and infants in accordance with American Red Cross guidelines. Instruction also covers the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), as well as the administration of Narcan and epinephrine. This course is ideal for individuals seeking essential knowledge in construction site safety. Total of 36 hours lecture and 27 hours laboratory.

BLDN 3003  CONSTRUCTION LAYOUT, FOUNDATIONS, AND FRAMING

Students will learn to interpret plans and specifications, apply building code requirements, and translate drawings into accurate site layouts. Through supervised lab activities, students will construct footings, foundations, floor, wall, ceiling, and roof framing; install stair systems; and work with both wood and light-gauge steel framing. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, safety, teamwork, and adherence to industry standards in preparation for apprenticeship-level work in the carpentry and construction trades. BLDN 3004  CONSTRUCTION ENCLOSURE AND FINISHING

This course provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skills to close in and finish residential and light commercial structures. Topics include installation of roofing systems, building envelope and control layers, windows and exterior doors, and exterior wall finishes. Students learn to apply thermal and sound insulation, finish interior walls and ceilings, install a variety of flooring systems, and complete interior doors and trim. Emphasis is placed on proper material selection, accurate measurement, safe use of tools, and application of industry-standard techniques to produce durable, code-compliant, and visually appealing finishes. Coursework integrates reading of construction documents, adherence to building codes, and application of critical thinking to solve real-world construction challenges. Total of 135 hours of laboratory.
