Identification, growth habits, culture and ornamental use of landscape and indoor plants adapted to climates of California. Plants emphasized will come from the current California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC) and Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Certification Tests Plant Lists. Covers those plants best observed and studied in the spring of the year. Plant materials from southern California will also be included, with special emphasis on drought tolerant plants. AGPS 120 ENTOMOLOGY AND INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT

Survey of arthropods and other horticultural pests. Study of plant-pest interactions and dynamics in both ecological and evolutionary contexts. Practice laboratory diagnostic procedures and techniques for pest identification. Design and implement integrated pest management strategies to specific horticultural scenarios. Landscape maintenance techniques to enhance the function and aesthetic value of public and private outdoor spaces. Topics include planting, pruning, watering, soil fertility, pest management, weed control, and landscape maintenance business practices. AGPS 130 TREE CARE AND URBAN FORESTRY

Principles about urban forestry, arboriculture careers, and tree care. Includes tree biology, tree identification, plant health care, soils, nutrition, planting, worker safety, climbing, pruning, tree care tools and equipment. Provides the knowledge necessary to be successful in the tree care profession. This course prepares the student to obtain a Certified Arborist designation through the International Society of Arboriculture. Required field trips. See Class Schedule for details. AGPS 132 LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION

Fundamentals of landscape construction, including soil preparation, paving and construction materials, hand and power tool use, turf and plant installation, plan reading, estimating, and bid preparation; also covers local codes, state requirements, and new technologies.
