Identification, growth habits, culture and ornamental use of landscape and indoor plants adapted to climates of California. Plants emphasized will come from the current California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC) and Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Certification Tests Plant Lists. Covers those plants best observed and studied in the spring of the year. Plant materials from southern California will also be included, with special emphasis on drought tolerant plants. Survey of arthropods and other horticultural pests. Study of plant-pest interactions and dynamics in both ecological and evolutionary contexts. Practice laboratory diagnostic procedures and techniques for pest identification. Design and implement integrated pest management strategies to specific horticultural scenarios. Principles about urban forestry, arboriculture careers, and tree care. Includes tree biology, tree identification, plant health care, soils, nutrition, planting, worker safety, climbing, pruning, tree care tools and equipment. Provides the knowledge necessary to be successful in the tree care profession. This course prepares the student to obtain a Certified Arborist designation through the International Society of Arboriculture. Required field trips. See Class Schedule for details. Topics include: soil preparation, paving and construction materials, hand and power tool use, turf and plant installation, plan reading, estimating, and bid preparation; covers local codes, state requirements, and new technologies.
