The Associate in Science in Nutrition and Dietetics for Transfer degree (AS-T in Nutrition and Dietetics) prepares students for success in a baccalaureate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with the lower-division coursework required to transfer into the CSU system for related majors. The study of nutrition provides a broad foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, and biology as students learn about chemicals and nutrients in food and their effects on the human body and the world. The program helps students understand the role of nutrition in disease prevention throughout the lifecycle as it aims to enhance the well-being of students by providing them with the tools to demonstrate health promoting behaviors as related to nutrition. The study of nutritional science contributes to preparing students for careers as nutritionists, registered dietitians (RD), food scientists, and other dietetics or fitness professionals. Instructional methods focus on delivering a high quality education that is evidence-based, engaging, and current to improve cultural awareness, serve diverse populations, and prepare students for transfer and the workforce.

Associate Degree for Transfer Requirements

  • 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units.
  • Completion of the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC); or students with rights to former general education patterns can complete California State University-General Education-Breadth pattern (CSU GE-Breadth) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC-CSU) pattern.
  • A minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district.
  • Obtainment of a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
  • All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, or P if the course is graded on a P/NP basis.

PLEASE NOTE: The courses that universities and colleges require for transfer vary. When selecting courses for transfer purposes, students should consult with an Academic Counselor to determine the particular transfer requirements of specific institutions.

Program Outcomes

  • Apply the physical, biological, and social sciences to the study of foods and nutrition.
  • Recognize how food and nutrition affect health and human performance across the lifecycle.
  • Examine and outline the process by which the human body ingests, digests, absorbs, transports, utilizes and excretes food substances.
  • Identify appropriate nutrition strategies for working with diverse populations with a variety of nutrition-related health needs.
