1501.00The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer Degree introduces students to a wide range of literary expression while grounding them in the core skills of writing, literary analysis, and critical thinking necessary for success as English majors at a transfer university.
English majors enroll in core classes in the methods of literary study and then take survey courses which expose them to a range of types and styles of literature. Students complete the program by choosing among English courses on genres, ethnic literature, special topics in literature, film, and creative writing. Aside from being well prepared to continue their studies, students who complete the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer Degree at PCC will be informed and skilled in ways which will help them negotiate their place in a changing world.
The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer Degree will be awarded upon completion of coursework totaling 60 California State University (CSU) transferable units including the above major requirements and the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC-CSU) or California State University General Education (CSUGE) requirements with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, or P if the course is graded on a P/NP basis. (Students completing this degree are not required to fulfill additional local graduation requirements.)

- Apply critical thinking skills in reading and writing, specifically to analyze the nuances of poetry, drama, fiction, or other types of literature
- Appraise critical conversations about the historical, social, cultural, and aesthetic contexts of literary texts
- Recognize how literature aligns with student interests, cultural diversity, and global awareness to support a global society, while considering the human condition from a multitude of perspectives by exploring culture/ethnicity, religions, personalities, communication styles, psychologies, sexualities, politics, and philosophies.
