Art History – Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer

The Associate in Arts in Art History for Transfer provides courses that enable students to complete lower division prerequisites and general education requirements for transfer to the CSU within the art history major and the completion of a baccalaureate degree, with guaranteed admission to a CSU to a similar major with junior standing, and the ability to complete their remaining requirements within 60 semester or 90 quarter units.

The Associate in Arts in Art History Degree for Transfer at Pasadena City College promotes an understanding of the history of art across cultures, geographic boundaries, periods of time, and visual media. Students are taught to apply fundamental terminology and methods to critically analyze human-made objects intended to be appreciated for their creative, emotional, spiritual, persuasive, and decorative features while articulating in written and verbal form their historical, social, theoretical, and aesthetic forms and functions from a global perspective.

Associate Degree for Transfer Requirements

  • 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units.
  • Completion of the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC); or students with rights to former general education patterns can complete California State University-General Education-Breadth pattern (CSU GE-Breadth) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC-CSU) pattern.
  • A minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district.
  • Obtainment of a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
  • All courses in the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, or P if the course is graded on a P/NP basis.

Program Outcomes

  • Analyze and discuss works of art in a variety of media and across a diverse range of historical, geographic, and cultural contexts utilizing art historical methods, as well as college-level and scholarly resources.
  • Identify and compare the aesthetic and philosophical characteristics of artistic movements, periods, styles, and cultural expressions in art history from a global perspective.
  • Evaluate visual modes of creative expression as a framework for understanding the human condition.
